SAM Standards Development

A

gnitio Advisors is committed to improving the policies, procedures and data used in the SAM space. As such, we are working to help standards bodies create standards that improve the overall software asset management process. The work Agnitio Advisors does on standards such as the draft software identification and tagging (ISO/IEC 19770-2) have a direct and positive impact on policies and procedures large organizations use for their software asset management programs.

Steven Klos of Agnitio Advisors has been appointed as Convener of the ISO/IEC 19770-2 'Other Working Group' that is tasked with completing the draft of ISO/IEC 19770-2 Software Tag for submission to WG21. Steven was a key individual responsible for the initial development of the draft. He is also a member of the US chapter of the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF US). For more information, read the "ISO WG21 Statement on the Way Forward" document.

The work Agnito Advisors does on the development of standards is voluntary work, but it is important work for the software industry and software users as a whole. The current goal for industry standards is, ultimately, to allow end-user organizations to readily identify all software installed on company owned computers and to understand exactly what each software entitlement provides. By providing a much more automated method of identification of software installations and entitlements, companies can significantly reduce the overhead required for SAM management.

The following articles provide information on how the standard will progress and who is volunteering their time to work on the standard.

Get Inolved in the Development

There are two ways to get inolved in the development of this important standard.  The first is to get involved in the public review of the standard.  A freely downloadable copy of the draft will be available from this web site as well as many others around the web.  This draft should be available by the end of January, 2008.  Please be aware, there should be no requirement for you to pay to get a copy of the standard, nor to become a member of any organization to get a copy of the standard and provide feedback - if the site you go to makes any requirements, find the standard on another site.

The second way you can get involved is to volunteer to help with the developmeent process.  Due to the fact that there were a number of delys in getting this standard progressing forward again, the development program is working on a very compressed schedule.  The final draft of the standard is currently scheduled to be made available for submission to ISO in May of 2008.  There is lots of work to do any the working group will welcome any help it can get!
